The fathers of the American constitutions provided the right to bear arms for hunting (a common thing at that time) and for uprising against the government should it become abusive.
They knew the slow and clumsy muskets and shot-guns of their own time. They could not have known the kinds of the modern weapons. Therefore, they could not have had the modern guns in mind when they wrote the 2nd amendment.
That amendment gives people the right to bear only those antique guns, not the right to bear the modern weapons. Furthermore, does anyone think that people with street guns can battle a bureaucracy armed with tanks, missiles, and nuclear weapons? The First Amendment is our best weapon against an abusive government.
