The vest is a type of wholecloth quilting. Using colored thread for the quilting shows the picture off. |

The scrap quilts are reversible, designs on both sides, so I can flip them over and change the look easily. They were made by my Mother in the 60's and got me quilting again, and then later in the 90's she gave them to me. (Shown folded over.) |
If you have many types of fabric and lots of it try a simple Crazy Quilt. Stripes of cloth can be knit or braided into rugs. You can make a checkerboard effect like the heart cardigan. Or find a simple small block that you like and cut the pieces out at the same time from the scraps from your main quilt. Find one that is simple with not many pieces. Put them in a bag by themselves, when you have enough or some extra time sew them together. Any sampler or scrap quilt can be put together with a neutral color in strips between blocks to bring it together.
It is important to have many fabrics since it is what you use the most. If you buy more than you need a sample block can be used not only for pleasing you but for fastness and shrinkage. Small squares should be used for that before you start. You will put time into your quilt and it is worth the extra effort in checking your fabric out.
An important tip for rotary cutting half triangles. Measure the short side of a finished triangle. Add 7/8" and cut a square that size. Cut in half diagonally.
