May 1998
The
Wallmen
put an ad in the Syracuse NewTimes
seeking a bass
player to replace Jethro
Deluxe, who
was preparing for the birth of his twins.
Brian
answers the ad, and after a few conversations about
hair and makup, is invited to rehearse with
the band. Showing up with a fretless six string bass and Chloë
Sevigny
was surely a bad omen. After two gigs in June, The
Wallmen break up. Even so, The band and Brian remain in
close and steady contact, and through this medium
Brian and Norm establish the beginnings of friendship.
Fall 1998
Summer 1999: Brian
goes back to college
and plays with several jazz and jam bands, getting all
the wanking out of his system. Norm
forms The Druggies
with Sean and Sean's
ladyfriend, Amber. Brian,
entranced by their live show and is drawn further into
the world of Norm.
Summer 1999
Summer 2000: Brian
searches to find his
identity, mistakenly at graduate school. He begins
recording his own music in earnest on a four track in
his bedroom late at night, honing his skills of
songwriting and musicianship. Brian also becomes
involved very seriously with a woman, effectively
ending his social life. While still playing with the
Druggies and recording two excellent albums, Norm also
begins putting a great deal of time and work into his
solo project The
Human.
September 2000:
Sean Curley moves
West. After several
attempts to get a project together with Sean, or
weasel his way into the Druggies, Brian is left
without a potential bandmate of equal talent and
imagination. Simultaneously, so is Norm, who still
manages to find a solid act to lead, The
Beauty Scene
Outlaws.
Fall 2000 - Spring 2001
Norm and Brian work
on solo
projects and aren't in very close contact at all.
Brian deems the fifteen minute drive to be "too long"
and that Norm is "too far away".
Late March 2001
Brian's relationship
ends abruptly
and he finds himself friendless. He reaches out to a
few folks, Norm included, to reintroduce him to
society.
April - July 2001
Norm and Brian become
closer. They share ideas on
music and favorite records as
well as other interests including food, travel, beekeeping and
cynicism. While still working on solo material, they
begin to listen to each other's work and develop a
mutual respect. The desire to perform together heats
up.
July 2001
At a Beauty Scene
Outlaws show where
Thunderosa is playing, Norm turns to Brian and speaks
the famous words: "Syracuse needs a quiet band". A few
nights later, at a local pub, the groundwork is laid
for The Coogles, though the band went through a few
other identities, among them The Hot Apes. Rehearsals
begin.
August 16, 2001
The Coogles live debut,
opening the
Torpedo Festival at the Planet. A nervous Brian
hampers the energy. Not defeated easily, Brian
convinces festival organizer Gregg Yeti to allow The
Coogles to play for the absent Beauty Scene Outlaws
the following night. The show is an overwhelming
success and earns The Coogles an early reputation as a
very enjoyable live band.
Fall 2001
While conflicting
work schedules slow the
band down, progress is being made to complete the
debut album People Ruin Everything as well as building
a presence on the Internet and designing merchandise
such as t-shirts, stickers and the first e.p. Doing
Good Things for People, to be released on October 13,
2001 at The Stag Hotel.
